Cars
So I'm trying to come up with a good list of cars to test drive and compare before I purchase one later this month. Am trying to wait until the 28th to actually buy, so that i only have one 6 month period of high insurance before my rates drop a bit at the gilded age of 25.

On my list so far:
Honda Civic/ Civic Hybrid ( years roughly 2002-2004ish)
Chevrolet Aveo ( 4 door, not hatchback)
Toyota Prius ( way out of my price range but still want to test drive for the heck of it)

So see really short list.

Any opinions on the above? any suggestions for other models to try?

My criteria: Fuel Economy I want good gas mileage (read close to 30 city), Price under 12,000, Year somewhere 2000 or above, car must be automatic.

Well guess that's it for now. I'll try to post more soon like about my OMG awesome trip to Busch Gardens.

Consider the Toyota Corolla.

Buying an older hybrid would be economic suicide if you end up needing a battery anytime soon.

i agree about the hybrids. there are some years that are no good (i don't know which, sorry). i have heard only good things about honda civics (non-hybrid) and their resale value/quality.

i am a fan of my Ford Focus, though i'm sorry to say, i don't know the city mileage. it gets somewhat less than my boyfriend's Honda, but he has a standard which gets better gas mileage anyway. it's a 2001 and besides a weird air-conditioning problem at 3yrs, i haven't had any problems not related to normal wear and tear, hitting a curb, or that wasn't covered by warranty.

and you have probably alread done this, but just in case, Consumer Reports seemed to have a good car buying guide that my friends bought. might be worth a glance a bookstore and/or purchase.

Last August, I bought a 2002 VW Golf 4DR (as I think you know), so I sort of went through a lot of this crap. I'd vote for a Civic or a decently put together American car because they're cheaper and easier to deal with, especially in they break. I love my V-Dub dearly, but when something goes wrong with it, it's a big fucking adventure, especially living in Bburg. On the bright side, the new Rabbits start at $14,000, so used ones may very well be very affordable. Mine only cost me $6500 at the time, but I got lucky. So yeah, if you can fork over around 12k, you should totally be able to find a decent car.
